Four strategies, proven for prevention.
Violence takes hold in four places: inside a relationship, in a neighborhood, in what a culture treats as normal, and in the financial situation that stops a woman from leaving.
The fund's four strategies cover all areas. In each area, we fund the groups with the best evidence, the lowest cost per woman protected, local people in charge, and the capacity to scale up efficiently.
We go looking. We do not take applications.
Candidates are found through consultation with peer funders, frontline practitioners, researchers and our own sector mapping, so organizations are identified on evidence of fit rather than fundraising capacity.
A shortlist then goes through two stages:
1. Eligibility and strategic fit,
2. An in-depth assessment of the evidence base, cost-effectiveness, leadership and governance, learning culture, and financial sustainability.
Where useful we work directly with leadership teams and review internal documents. Assessments are revisited as new evidence arrives.
Our grantees
The fund currently supports six charities and projects, and reviews new candidates on an ongoing basis. Each grantee sits under one of the four strategies.
What major donors get, and how the money moves.
The fund both commissions original research and reviews existing research. The fund is also open to funding grantees who plan to run their own research. Methods and assumptions are shared where feasible, including back-of-the-envelope calculations.
Prevention gets 0.2% of global aid.
Annual funding for preventing violence against women and girls is roughly US$410 million, against a global aid budget of about US$212 billion. USAID, historically the largest funder of gender-based violence work, no longer exists. The share of women affected has not fallen in 30 years.
